SoFi Tech Solutions, formerly Galileo, has partnered with Mexican fintech Orbi and Mastercard to launch a cryptocurrency-linked card program in Mexico. The new card allows Orbi customers to pay using their cryptocurrency balances at any Mastercard-accepting merchant, while comercios receive traditional currency through seamless conversion at the point of sale. Orbi will become the first cryptocurrency-focused client to issue cards through Mastercard’s BIN sponsorship program in Mexico via SoFi Tech Solutions.

The partnership leverages SoFi Tech Solutions’ infrastructure to provide card issuance, transaction authorization, processing, and regulatory compliance. The platform will also support future stablecoin-based use cases through Mastercard’s trust network, with SoFiUSD serving as the stablecoin backing the transactions. This initiative aligns with Mexico’s position as one of the world’s largest remittance markets, where stablecoins are increasingly used for cross-border money movement.

Stablecoins Gain Traction in Latin America

Data from Bitso indicates that stablecoins represented 40% of cryptocurrency purchases by users in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Colombia in 2025, surpassing Bitcoin’s 18% share. This marks the first time stablecoins have overtaken BTC in regional Bitso transaction data. The growing adoption reflects a shift toward more stable digital assets for everyday transactions and remittances, particularly in markets with volatile local currencies.

Kathleen Pierce-Gilmore, president of SoFi Tech Solutions, highlighted Mexico’s remittance significance. “Mexico is one of the largest remittance markets globally, and stablecoins are becoming a key channel for moving money across borders,” she said. “Together with Orbi and Mastercard, we’re offering Mexicans a secure way to receive, hold, and spend digital dollars while laying the foundation for large-scale stablecoin-backed payments and cross-border transfers.”

Card Functionality and Infrastructure

Orbi customers will access both physical and virtual cards linked to their cryptocurrency holdings. When making purchases, funds are converted at the point of sale so merchants receive traditional currency. SoFi Tech Solutions’ connection to Mexico’s national payment network, Mexico Domestic Switch (MxDS), will process card transactions and ATM withdrawals. Leonardo Pérez, Orbi’s cofounder, emphasized the collaboration’s evolution: “The Orbi Mastercard card is the result of our work with SoFi Tech Solutions and Mastercard, an alliance that has continued strengthening since our inception. We’re building an experience that transforms digital dollars into real-world purchasing power, offering people in Mexico a familiar way to use their assets anywhere Mastercard is accepted.”

Silvana Hernández, president of Mastercard LATAM’s Northern Division, noted the growing role of digital assets in personal finance. “Digital assets are becoming increasingly important in how people safeguard and move money, and the opportunity lies in making their use as simple and reliable as traditional payment methods,” she added. “Working with SoFi Tech Solutions and Orbi, we’re enabling stablecoin settlement while connecting digital assets to payment experiences people already know, backed by Mastercard’s security and widespread acceptance.”

Technology and Regional Expansion

SoFi Tech Solutions brings its U.S. fintech expertise to Latin America, combining SoFi’s digital financial service experience with Galileo’s 30+ years in payments and processing, and Technisys’ core banking capabilities. The integrated platform offers modular services for financial institutions, including card issuance and processing, real-time transaction controls, digital wallet features, and stablecoin settlement infrastructure. These tools can be used independently or combined to support digital-first financial products tailored to regional needs.

The infrastructure supports debit, credit, and prepaid card processing with real-time controls, digital issuance, tokenization, and push provisioning. Payment and money mobility services include ACH and wire transfers, real-time payments, card-based transactions, and emerging digital asset liquidation. The core banking system enables real-time account and transaction management, while composable digital banking features allow for mobile and web experiences. Credit and loan capabilities, along with integrated fraud and risk management, complete the suite of offerings.
